Some rooms work perfectly because every item is in balance and harmony with every other item…and some work because one fabulous diva of a piece steals the show. Here are 10 rooms with over-the-top statement pieces that might inspire you to go out on a design limb and shake things up at home.

An enormous mirror charmingly overwhelms a Malm dresser from IKEA, but its white paint keeps it from feeling too heavy or busy. The generous proportions of the mirror allow it to reflect nearly the entire bedroom, multiplying the light to the max. Bonus: There's another enormous, antique mirror in the living room.

In this Madrid home (featured on Nuevo Estilo) full of statement lighting, this larger-than-the-dining-table chandelier still manages to stand out. Hanging such a large piece so close to the diners' heads creates an experience that's whimsical and transportive — any meal eaten directly under a sparkling constellation is inherently special.

In Kelly's dressing room, a gorgeous piece of clothing becomes a sculpture that dominates the space and keeps it from feeling like a closet. And it's not the only room in this home that demands attention: see the dramatic portrait that hangs over the petite love seat in the living room.

A statement window shade?! Is that a thing? It's totally possible—and covetable—when it's a wide Roman shade custom-made with Timorous Beasties' Napoleon Bee fabric. The rest of the room is outfitted in mostly solid luxe fabrics, allowing the bees to take center stage.

Reclaimed signs are, in general, always statement pieces, as their style and scale make them stand out. Here, a sign from the 1930s dominates, even when joined by musical instruments and a custom light made of antique components.

Eric's living room boasts (at least) two statement pieces: the boldly shaped and hued sofa and the enormous chandelier. The mostly white palette allows these major pieces, along with the bright art and neon light, to shine in the ultra minimalist space.

The bedroom in Julien's 466-square-foot apartment is just big enough for a bed—and an oversized painting he made. The bold color and large size of the art makes his bedroom truly feel like a room rather than just a nook.

In a room furnished mostly with industrial pieces and gray textiles, this vibrant rug shines bright. It also pulls together the small pops of color throughout the space, such as the throw pillows and the colorful art.

If you usually like to play it safe, consider splashing out stylistically on just one piece. "Our furniture isn't usually 'look at me' – it's present without dictating," said Oona Bannon to The Telegraph about her style. "Obviously, with this sofa we ripped up that rule book entirely." Once again, Timorous Beasties' fabric — this time, Graffiti Stripe velvet — is the star of the show. A nearly all-white palette allows the sofa to truly pop, while the colors in the fabric tie together the few brightly colored pieces (a yellow side table, red desk, and green cabinet) scattered throughout the home.

I had a hard time picking just one statement piece from designer Caitlin Wilson's Portland home, featured on MyDomaine: there's the floral love seat in the entryway, the leopard-print chair in the dining room, the purple gingham headboard in the bedroom, and the hot pink sofa in the living room to choose amongst! I finally went with this neon crib because nurseries are often small rooms, so just a coat of paint on a standard crib can dramatically change the look and feel of the entire space.
